Scholar
In Residence
The Scholar in Residence,
selected on the basis of outstanding work as a philosophy major, will
receive a
scholarship covering 16 credits of in-state tuition for the Fall term,
plus a stipend for books and living expenses, and may be renewed for
the
following Spring term. The total value
of the award is anticipated to be approximately $5000 per semester. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide economic support to enable the student to devote more time and focus to the study of philosophy.
Minimum Qualifications:
1.
Major in Philosophy at UNLV
2.
Junior/Senior class standing and full-time registration for the
upcoming academic
year.
Any student wishing to be considered for
this award
should submit an application with:
1. Transcripts of all undergraduate work
(unofficial transcripts are acceptable)
2. A list of all current coursework
3. A list of all scholarships and other awards
received
4. Two letters of recommendation from university
professors or equivalent. At least one letter must be from a
member of the UNLV Department of Philosophy.
5. Two or three writing samples.
Choose two or three examples of your
writing of
which you are particularly proud. Choose
from papers you have written for philosophy
classes,
essays you have written in response to essay questions on exams, etc. Students are encouraged to consult with a philosophy faculty member about an appropriate writing sample.
6. A
personal statement of 500-700 words that discusses:
(a) your
history of accomplishments (academic, particularly in philosophy)
(b) your goals regarding philosophy (including plans for graduate
study)
(c) your leadership potential
(d)
what you would do if you are selected as Scholar in Residence
7. A current mailing and email address.
Applications should be directed
to the “Student Awards Committee” and be delivered in person to the
Department
of Philosophy, CDC Building #4.
Applications
for awards for the 2010-2011 academic year are due by 9am on April 19, 2010.
